| | We've seen those old saloons in the Westerns. Someone is playing the piano, a curmudgeonly bartender or friendly barmaid slaps a whiskey on the bar, the regulars check out the newcomer. But Hollywood doesn't begin to do justice to the real "thirst parlors," as the genteel used to call them, that still survive in the West.
Comfy, cozy places, rich with the patina of years, these saloons continue to offer the pleasures of liquid refreshment, companionship and, often, some decent grub. They usually have a colorful history, strange aged objects hanging on the walls, a piano tucked somewhere and, yes, an appropriate barkeep.
In these days of gentrification and yuppification, it is getting harder to find the genuine article, but I found five tucked into the small towns of western Sonoma and Marin counties.

In order to insure that the setting was authentic, a pub designer from England was brought to California to help with the design. After approval by Vallco and the City of Cupertino, the plans were sent to England where the complete interior of the pub was built. | San Francisco's Union Street Eco-Urban Festival |
| | In its 33rd year, The Union Street Festival is one of San Francisco's largest free annual events. In 2008 we added an eco-zone to the event where we reserved two blocks of the six block Festival for green exhibitors, businesses and educational displays.
This year the east entrance of the Festival, (beginning at Gough) will again feature arts and crafts created with recycled and sustainable materials and eco-friendly exhibits. Additionally, the Festival showcases 150 arts & crafts booths, 25 gourmet food booths, two stages of live entertainment and bistro style cafes.
San Francisco is a forward thinking city and the Union Street Festival with its eco-urban theme helps promote the value of Green thinking in all aspects of our day to day lives.
The Festival is held on San Francisco's fashionable Union Street where historic Victorians have been transformed into popular boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. Over 100 staff members are on-site to assist exhibitors and the public. Parking is available three blocks from the event site. |

| | Studio Pink House is a home ground of PH2 (Pink House 2) which is Matt (Guitar) and Yocco (Vocal)'s Jazz Duo. For the last 4 years, Studio Pink House hosted many concerts from armature to internationally famous professional musicians in a cozy, saloon style environment. Some recordings were done at the studio to help local musicians including near by West Valley College jazz education programs. Studio Pink House started sponsoring 'Sunday Afternoon Jazz Jam session' in September 2006, which is held at Blue Rock Shoot in Saratoga. |
